Yet another shooting at an American university

Posted by alifinmath on February 15, 2008

I see five people have been shot dead at Northern Illinois University, with maybe another score injured. These events seems to happen frequently at American universities (and at shopping malls and places of work). One wonders why in the US and nowhere else in the Western world. There was an incident in Scotland in the ’90s when about twenty schoolchildren got shot dead but the British government then moved with alacrity to ban all handguns. In the US, nothing but inertia, apathy, crocodile tears, and no dissenting voice please (after all, this is a time for “healing” and “reconciliation”). Interesting, too, that these shootings occur in the vast anonymous, alienated, bureaucratically controlled spaces that constitute American schools and universities — and which epitomise modern American life.
